A Letter To My Daughter

Dear my lovely little girl,

As I write this, I am already aware that there are many letters like this, but they will not ever be the same, since this is for you. That is how I want you to see yourself. There might be many others like you, but they will never be the same as you, because you are exactly who God created you to be.

There will always be other young ladies who will dress like you or you like them. They will have similar hairstyles and music interests. They might read the same books or talk about the same books you talk about. They will be like you, but they will never be you.

I need you to know you are unique and are made for a purpose. You are made for the glory of God and given a specific role to play in His kingdom. You are special in His eyes and mine, but His are more important.

Yes, His  eyes are more important. He will see you as He made you to be and I will never be able to see you as perfectly as our Creator does.

Believe me, when I hold you in my arms, I know I am holding a precious piece of creation who has been entrusted to me. I pray when I embrace you, you can sense a deep love that is pointing you to the Creator and not away from Him.

Let me remind you of something I just wrote, that you might have read over, “You are special”. Please don’t ever forget that.

There will be many people in your life that will strive to bring you down and make you feel like you are not. Just remember, they did not make you, so they have no right to claim that power. Do not allow them to have that control. Rest in who you are and Who you belong to.

No man will ever be more important than your Creator. No man can define you. Do not allow your relationship status to cause you to lose focus. In fact, I need you to realize that it is ok to be single. Relationships are great, but just because your friends have romance, does not mean that you need it too.

Allow yourself freedom and let God lead the right person into your life. Your mother and I are praying for that man right now. We are praying that a man will come into your life when you are ready.

How do you know when you are ready?

You are ready when you are strong enough on your own and do not need a man to make you feel complete. You are not completed by another human. God completes you, but you can be complemented by another.

Please live free.

Do not feel like you can’t make a mistake. Know that I have made plenty. God loves you regardless, He does not want you to rest in your sinfulness, but to live in His holiness.

Be who God has led you to be. Don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams, but be wise. You will fail and that’s alright, I actually want you to.This will keep you humble and you will be able to realize you are not greater than anyone else.

Serve everyone. You are not better and you never will be. Whatever your financial situation, don’t hold on too tightly. Whatever your social status, let it go, because you never know when that status will change. This is why you walk with empathy and compassion for all who are around you (rich, poor, popular or unpopular, etc.).

Be a lover of all people and use your talents to make their lives better. Your influence will change their life.

I want to end this letter with an “I love you”. I love you so much that I cannot allow this letter to not be written. I love you so much that I will constantly push you to be the best you possible, not for me, but for you. I love you so much that I will let you know if a guy isn’t right for you because I never want you to settle for the first guy who says, “You’re cute”.

I want you to know that you don’t have to say I love you back. I hope you will say it back to me, but if you don’t, I can handle that because my love for you is not dependent on your love for me. That’s how God works, so I need to strive to work like He does.

Love is serious. It is not flippant. Please think hard before you say it. Do not rush into “I love you” with anyone. Only say it if you mean it.

Just remember: When you say, “I love you”, it requires you to be vulnerable. If you say it to every person you are in a relationship with, it becomes meaningless and you lose the purpose of the words. Loving a person is different from loving a cheeseburger but, unfortunately, too many people have lost the difference.

Be patient. Wait. Love will come, but don’t rush it.

May you always know you are precious to me. May you always know I love you with everything in me. May you always know that God defines you, nobody else, not even me.

I love you my daughter and I always will.
