Fighting For Space

“Ladies and gentleman, we have a full flight, so we will be running out of overhead space. Please be ready to check your bags at the end of the jetway.”

These are the words that came over the speakers while waiting to board my plane to California. Luckily for me, I only had my backpack that fit securely under the seat in front of me, but I heard loud sighs come from several people around me.

I walked down the jetway and saw a row of strollers and carry-on bags waiting to be carried to an unknown location.

As I got to my seat, I still saw people trying to force bags into an compartment. I watched as people in aisle seats sat in fear of the bag falling and hitting them in the head or, even worse, the passenger’s belly rubbing against their head while attempting to force their bag into a small space.

While watching this unfold, on almost every flight I was on, I couldn’t help but think about our life.

For many of us, we have our schedule packed full. We have our lives so stuffed with bags and we keep trying to find ways to fit one more thing in the compartment. We are overloaded, but we think we can add more.

There are way too many of us who have pushed ourselves to maximum capacity and our cabins are about to bust.

So, what do you do when your lives get overloaded?

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Am I filling my time with necessary activities?
  2. What am I giving up for what I am doing now?
  3. Are there things I wish I was doing?
  4. Why am I filling my time with so much?

Now, these are very simple questions, but they will aid with assessing your time and life to make sure you are not overloading your storage bin.

If your answer to number one is no, then look over your calendar and be ready and willing to cancel events and/or say no to things that are not necessary.

Think about numbers two through three, consider if you’re overdoing it and missing out on important events due to your inability to find balance.

Take some time to look over your calendar and schedule. See where you’re overloaded. Weigh out the importance and be willing to say no. Slow down and make sure you’re not trying to cram too much into a space that is already filled.

May you find value in your time today. May you restore freedom in your calendar by removing unnecessary activities.
